Forest Sidewalks

For the most part, sidewalks are hard, unforgiving areas of concrete and stone, held in permanent shadow; Unpleasant, lifeless and uninviting.

It doesn't have to be this way! Sidewalks could be planted with shrubs and trees, preventing views of the busy street beyond. Paths running in opposite directions could be divided with natural hedges of hardy plants. These measures alone would aid traffic flows and prevent the undesirable side-effects endured by pedestrians when they mingle with automotive traffic.

Better still, wildlife would reinhabit the inner city, bringing joy and wonderment to people starved of nature's influence, blind to the simple pleasure of observing a small, furry critter teaching its young to forage.

The air would be cleaner, people happier and cities more beautiful. Monkeys, chattering and swinging by their tails, will relieve you of any uneaten fruit left in your briefcase or lunchbox, at the end of the day.

Yes, there are trees on footpaths, now. I'm looking for a commitment to turn sidewalks into the green profusion of country lanes and walkways. You know you want it.

baked all over britain, though the councils are not stupid enough to put grass on the pavements/sidewalks. [calum, May 19 2005]

I wonder if grass could be substituted for the sidewalk concrete? (link)

Not like that, necessarily, [Zimmy]. They are a good idea but they wear the grass out. I was after something much more forested, whilst retaining the serviceability of a paved path surface.

I'm only voting for this if it involves monkeys.

I see a problem in that general street crime and casual muggings would increase, due to the relative privacy of the woodland paths you speak of.

Highly trained Enforcer Monkeys could be utilised to police the footpaths (sidewalks).

Bottom line: give us monkeys, and you shall get bread.

On the 8th anno~, monkeys were added.

[calum], this is about more than grass verges. This is rainforest; impenetrable jungle; gloomy, humid and dense... like a real forest, so you can hear the cars but not see the cars.

You could pretend the car noises were actually a distant thundering waterfall
