Forever Fuel Card
Buy the gallons now, pump them in later.

What with the new forever stamp, why not make a forever fuel card, good for some number of gallons. In other eras where fuel prices have skyrocketed, some people took to gathering stockpiles, which tended to evaporate, or ignite in unsafe fashion.

Gasoline (petrol) stations can sell them in denominations specifically designed to allow them to apply maximum gouge force on the buyer based on the 9/10 cent scam. They can also have immediate access to the money you spend on the cards, essentially given them an interest free loan with a promise for future gasoline (petrol).

The buyers in the mean time will have a convenient card, capable of "storing" fuel for times of need, this will essentially allow the buyer to "hoard" fuel, and perhaps sell it themselves at a higher premium later on, much like stocks, without the typical risks inherent in large stockpiles of flammable liquids. Also, since the gas cards exist, it may behoove the stations to keep the prices fairly constant, rather than increasing them by leaps and bounds each summer. The cards can likely also be made to work in the existing ATM slots found in many gas stations, without the need for typing in personal information, which could help to cut down on identity theft, and otherwise help to protect the privacy of people who so desire.

Promissary cards of this nature could become a lucrative business for speculation, and ten years from now, when things are starting to progress poorly, a powerful EMP, or a massive giveway of eelskin wallets would likely erase the data on most of them, thus clearing the gas companies of any need to repay on their promises. It's a perfect model of American Business at it's finest.

Oops. Pretend you never read that last paragraph there.

       are oil futures not baked?

Voice, May 20 2007

Mini gas futures are indeed Baked.

DrCurry, May 20 2007

They've got this with some colleges in the US now. You pay tutition for your child (infant, tween - whatever) at today's going rate and then when the time comes, no matter the rate of tuition, your child's tuition is already paid up. If your kid decides to embark on a life of crime or doesn't get into that school, the money paid is refunded to the parents.

What does the school get out of it? Interest on the invested $ for the years between when the parents paid and when it is time for junior to enroll.

It is baked in the futures market but I have not seen it at retail level. [+].

It's Baked at the retail level.

DrCurry, May 22 2007

Prices are too volatile at too wide a range for the companies to go for this.

That said, sign me up for a thousand gallons right now. I want to make some road trips this summer, and the distance gets a little shorter with every upward tick on the gas station's sign.

       Baked. I've supplied a link.

Shall I send you my paypal account number for a transaction of $345,000 there Elhigh?

Your 1,000 gallon card will be sent in the mail along with a complimentary refrigerator magnet and eelskin wallet within 4-8 weeks...

Now if you don't mind, I need to put in a bid for a house, and order some solar panels.

Like I said, this thing is baked at the retail level.

methinksnot, May 24 2007

Please note that mass comodity purchase in anticipation of future price increases is the cause and effect of runaway inflation.

Voice, May 24 2007

Cripes, gas is $345/gal where you live, [ye]? Walking is looking better and better...

elhigh, May 24 2007

Tell me about it... But when the nearest store is a mile away, and the nearest school is in the next city...

Well, I get some exercise when I do my shopping anyhow.

We may be able to work out a forever fuel card for the price of fuel in your area... once I start a chain.

//note that mass comodity purchase in anticipation of future price increases is the cause and effect of runaway inflation.//

True, but is this really comodity purchasing? Since the price of crude has not risen much in quite a while, it is likely that the increase is produced through market manipulation, or as a rationing process. (rationing necessities by cost rarely works, so I suspect the first reason...) Since we've not actually bouth the fuel, we've just paid for it, there would be some impetus to keep the fuel prices about the same, after all, there's only so much interest a company can make off of futures, and if they can't turn a profit on the fuel cards, they must either give the gas away at a loss, give the gas away at a fair price, or dishonestly go brankrupt, and buy their own company out with the profits to cancel the fuel cards. Hmm, since this think is baked at the retail level, I would advise against investing heavily in gas (petrol) station stocks...
