Free-wheeling is generally dangerous because of the loss
of
feeling a driver experiences through ones controls.
However if the relief of the road permits, free wheeling
is
quite a good way to cut down on fuel (i only drive manual
vehicles), however because it sometimes effects road
handling
it isnt always practical.
i propose a mechanism that encourages a driver to free-
wheel by maintaining suitable resistance in the final
drive,
thereby improving feel recieved by the driver.
for inexperienced free-wheelers the most common
mistake
is the inability to select the correct gear to return to
when
the engine needs to be engaged. for this i suggest that
the
manual gear shift be moved into the correct gear by
some
electro-mechanical device.
Locking Freewheel
Locking_20Freewheel Trying to solve the same problem, but lacking any details of how to implement it. [mitxela, Aug 26 2009]

//encourages a driver to free- wheel by maintaining suitable resistance in the final drive// Or do what most diesels do, and simply cut the fuel to the engine, whilst leaving the drive-train unbroken. |

i was thinking of a flywheel (baked) that
intercepts the gearbox and the engine. when
applying neutral the flywheel kicks in and by using
the break pedal to slow down the wheels, this
brake pedal would also control a clutch that
engages the gearbox and flywheel. |

this idea is not about conservation of kinetic
energy, in order to reclaim it later, however the
flywheel could double as a generator/capacitor of
a sort, this is half-baked/baked. |

this idea employs the 'engine braking' that the
engine would otherwise provide, under normal
circumstances. |

Have a display with a number that shows suggested gear that changes based on speed. Also, apply the fully baked assisted-tranny-throttle-blip system that the new 370z's use ... |

Also, maybe post "Freewheeling encouraged" signs on suitable hills, although that could cause problems, as most roadways are plagued by idiots. |

I think that a locking freewheel would have better results, but it's easier said than done. |

As for the hills, I think there should be legislation regarding the placement of traffic lights at the bottom of hills. It means you have to waste all your energy on the way down, and use more energy accelerating on the way up (as opposed to hitting the hill at speed). |
