Upon the purchase of groceries, one scans them on a barcode reader. Using this barcode, an inventory of foods in the fridge is created-- and displayed on an LCD screen on the door.
This screen will tell you name, quantity, and age-- so perfectly good foods that've been lost to the fridge's nether depths
aren't ignored and fossilized 'leftovers' aren't ingested.

Actually, this croissant-in-the-making is specifically to /prevent/ doctors from discovering life-saving fungii in the casserole.
It occurs to me that on unbarcoded fruits and veggies, should this be accepted, that barcodes could be issued by the cashier-- they could be printed out with the receipt. |
