Wikipedia: Kabaddi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabaddi
Hm! I'd never heard of that. [jutta, Oct 16 2009]

Simple rules for Kabaddi http://www.kabaddi-kabaddi.com/play.htm
Each team alternate in sending one of their players in to try and touch as many of the opposition players as possible before running out of breath as they chant kabaddi, kabaddi, kabaddi.... [theleopard, Oct 16 2009]

       Been there. Barbary shop?
csea, Oct 16 2009

       Eh?
theleopard, Oct 16 2009

Indeed, with barbarians rather than barbers.

So it's a 'capture the flag' contest, with whomever sings the most notes into the... er... flag the winner?
Jinbish, Oct 16 2009

Might be difficult to keep a bass.
RayfordSteele, Oct 16 2009

Yes, exactly like capture the flag, but with a microphone stand. It also has an element of Kabaddi in it, in that the fighter with the microphone has to defend himself whilst belting out a catchy number.

Lovely. Suspect Martha Walsh/The Rock double-team would be unbeatable.

       //Martha Walsh/The Rock double-team //

Nice. Would also make the x-factor final a lot more interesting.

Would it be possible to automate the note-to-person mapping, or would there have to be human score keepers?
jutta, Oct 16 2009

Well, Sing-Star can judge the ability of the singer, so it just takes a gadget for the computer to identify who is in possession of the microphone. Perhaps each singer could have an RFID-enabled knuckle duster?

Further events include the two-team Assault version, in which one team attempts to protect a lone singer, while the other tries to drag her off the stage. Ever seen an old movie in which a fight breaks out in a blues bar and the singer carries on regardless? That's the kind of unwavering steel your team's singer would need.
theleopard, Oct 16 2009

Oh! I was thinking of using the voice profile to identify the singer. That way, someone shouting from a distance might out-sing someone closer by but with a weaker voice.

Since the poster mentions Kabaddi - what's the deal with holding one's breath in Kabaddi? How do they know?
jutta, Oct 16 2009

//holding one's breath in Kabaddi? How do they know //

They know by the "raider" having to constantly say "kabaddi-kabaddi- kabaddi-kabaddi", and if there's a pause in that constant noise for a draw of breath, you'll hear it and he's out. Hence my likening it to this: they both embark upon a violent engagement, all the while concentrating on using their voice box.

Do you get bonus points/kudos/whatever if your blows sync with the song's percussion?
nick_n_uit, Oct 16 2009

I suppose that eventually it might coalesce into semi staged fight-song sequences by covert groups, eventually arriving at a power ballad strain of capoeira.
calum, Oct 16 2009

[nick], unfortunately not. Results are borne from singing, not from the actual fighting itself.

It was, I admit, a toss up between 4 pugilistic singers and 4 singing pugilists, but I don't want it to sound like thugs screaming Tom Jones. They've got to be able to sing first, fight second.

interesting crossover opportunities... opera/sumo...no, not really.
