Funky Pedestrian Crossing

On a recent visit to Dublin I noticed that the pedestrian crossing beeps sounded tantilisingly similar to someone striking a regular rhythym using a wah-wah pedal, only the sound was too clean and, well, beepy (I was sober at the time, honest).

Full musical pedestrian crossings are baked, but largely uninspiring (although if Leeds had ones that played the Countdown Conundrum Theme in honour of the late Richard Whiteley, that might be fitting).

So let's instead have a pedestrian crossing with just a real, half-decent wah-wah pedal audio accompanyment - something along the lines of the intro to Propellerheads' "OHMSS" is what I'm thinking of.

Don't walk, groove.

Would you have to perambulate across the street whilst walking this way? [Ian Tindale, Mar 12 2006]

I like this. Pedestrian culture is neglected. And it's better to have something everyone can enjoy and use instead of people saying, "oh, that's just for blind people".

Given that UK (and Irish?) crossings are named after animals - pelican crossing, zebra crossing, etc. - then I guess this would be the funky chicken crossing?

I thought that was a pretty good annotation [DrCurry], good on ya mate!

       idea gets bun

use some Marilyn Manson for a Full Metal Crossing?

jonthegeologist, Mar 10 2006

They should do something with the crossing on Abbey Road at St Johns wood.[+]

       Linky.

Odd, I'd swear I'd read something like this just a few days ago when researching my last idea. Closest I can find now is:
\\I'd also like a little DDR action: add a soundtrack and light up the steps. (DDR=dance dance revolution)

On the Billie Jean Crosswalk idea.

(Edit: Found it. It was in an obscure category)

I don't know the Propellerheads, but I'd like my local crossings to play the intro bass riff from Wild Cherry's 'Play That Funky Music'.

zen_tom, Mar 10 2006

I think it would have to be either the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" ("You can tell by the way I use my walk I'm a woman's man" - remember John Travolta's strutting in the film?) or the theme from Shaft ("Who is the man that would cross the road for his brother man? Shaft! Can you dig it?")

...or "Ah cross one hundred and tenth street..."

Ian Tindale, Mar 10 2006

Hidden Truths, I spotted that idea too before posting (and the ones about music), but this one is specifically about using the wah-wah pedal sound, rather than focusing on rhythym. I really wish that I could post a non copyright infringing link of OHMSS to show what I mean.

Funky Chicken? Ok, if we can have the Funky Gibbon too.

I Imagined the ones in Dublin would play a burst of Riverdance, and you'd get extra points for high-kicking and tap-dancing across the road.

coprocephalous, Mar 10 2006

Hippo got it right.. have the Shaft theme would be the perfect song for getting across the street. Because when you cross that intersection you will be one baaaad mother-SHUT YO MOUTH!

+ as long as the WALK sign reads //GROOVE//

I'm with [hippo]'s "Staying Alive" - funky and promotes road safety.

wagster, Mar 10 2006

I think the theme to Benny Hill would be nice. Then maybe every once in a while an old man chasing a beautiful woman wearing a bra and panties would go by in fast motion.
