Geezer Gangs

With the rapid aging of the population of Baby Boomers, in most Western countries, it's anly a matter of time before we see the emergence of vigilante Geezer Gangs, protecting their property, from the very children and grandchildren whose inheritance they have seemingly usurped.

Dressed in preppy clothes and driving shiny big SUVs they will strike terror into hearts of the poor and oppressed wherever they go.

Streets will be safe at night, under the watchful eyes of these unsleeping guardians of normalcy.

Gray Panthers http://www.graypant...anthers/history.htm
well, they're not exactly a "gang" [dentworth, Oct 07 2005]

Ah, already attracted a Baby Boomer? :)
UnaBubba, Oct 06 2005

I really don't think big shiny SUVs are representative of Baby Boomers, but rather their offspring. Better Boomer symbolism might be had from VW microbuses painted with flowers and peace signs, or if you prefer, Dodge Caravans. And preppy clothing? How about polyester shirts and 3-piece suits with lapels like the wings of a small plane, and platform shoes with three-inch soles?

And as for the striking terror part, maybe they could cause a little concern now and then. You know, raise the pulse somewhat, but terror?

And where do you get the unsleeping stuff from? I can hardly stay awake through an entire afternoon... I mean they, yeah, that's it, THEY can hardly... Oh, crap. I guess it's obvious. I'm a Boomer. Never drove a VW. Or a Caravan. And the shoes were only an inch and a half. But I'm no Geezer!

I envisioned hordes of fountains, alas we have gangs of disguised carol singers.

"Vigilante" doesn't quite square with "Public: law enforcement"

I don't get the SUV's and preppy clothes. I see a "Hell's Geezers" motorcycle gang.

Monty Python did the age part of the joke a long time ago (roving band of grandmothers), although without the class aspect. I tend to think of old people as particularly vulnerable to poverty, so I don't really get the SUV/preppy clothes thing, either.

The funny thing about funerals. Those not in the box yet tend to get the last laugh.

Hmmm... Boomers in my part of the world tend to be affluent, 55-65yo retirees with healthy retirement funds and shiny cars that are bigger than they need.

Maybe I've turned up a difference in definition between countries?

King: "You'll be executed at dawn."

       Prisoner: "Mercy!"

King: "Mm, must be French, he thanked me."

I miss-read this as Freezer Gangs who would go around turning their hapless victims into snowmen.

Ok UB you're officially on my s-list. geezers are not 55 y. o.s and furthermore, did you ever hear of the gray panthers? No, you are too young to remember!
dentworth, Oct 07 2005

Were the grey panthers the ones who displaced our UK-native red panthers?
coprocephalous, Oct 07 2005

I'm also in the wrong time zone, [dentworth].
UnaBubba, Oct 07 2005

Well, ok UB I'll admit, the gray panthers were a flash in the pan of the 70's silliness.and their fame may have been limited to the US.East coast. They were a copy cat of the Black Panthers [copro].
dentworth, Oct 07 2005

The red panthers were just a bit of Noughties silliness [dent], I made them up ;-) (Yes, I do remember the 70's, but I'm not looking forward to visiting my own personal version...)

My most vivid memory of 1972 is of hearing a news item about the body count in Vietnam, on the radio. It struck me as bizarre, even as an 8 year old.
UnaBubba, Oct 07 2005

the Gray Panthers were anti-war activists too.
