The AEGIS system is a ship-borne military defence weapon that uses high definition radar and a high-volume cannon to identify and shoot down airborne threats. It's very effective, spraying bullets in a grid pattern at an enormous rate. Inbound missiles are detonated at a safe range, protecting the
ship and its occupants.
Commercial airliners need a similar system to deal with potential birdstrikes. If a flock of birds strays into the path of a 'plane the captain flips the switch and a shower of ice pellets (don't want to slaughter kiddies on the ground with a hail of depleted uranium slugs) takes out the geese / ducks / storks / seagulls in a hail (literally) of high velocity projectiles.
On the ground, it just presents as a small, unseasonal hailstorm that might put a dent or two in a couple of cars.
Also useful against UFOs, Santa Claus and wayward fairies.

I dunno. I kinda like the idea of one bird taking out a big airliner. Who are we to claim the air for our own? The air has belonged to birds for far longer than we even walk upright, so.. |

Well the birds claimed the air from the bugs, and now we claim it from the birds. Seems like a good progression to me. |

I suspect you'd think differently if your family were on the Airbus whose engines swallowed a flock of geese, [zeno]. |

Should have been a Flock Of Seagulls. |

I always wondered where Jonathan Livingstone Seagull went. Now I think I know. |

Yes, but...birds have family. |

Think of that next time you eat chicken. |
