There are concrete tile with holes so grass can grow through. People use them for drive ways. They stay short on their own at the tracks. |

Use hovercraft... the low footprint won't tear up the soil.
Alternatively, an adaption of Neal Stephenson's idea - put rigis wire netting just above the soil so you don't actually touch it, but the grass still pokes through. |
