Green Acceleration Light

Central top mounted brake light is green when accelerating, red when braking.

This would allow you to see not only when people are stopping, but when they're accelerating as well.

When just cruising it would just be off like a regular brake light. I'm not sure if this would be useful or not.

       I dunno, [doc]. If a car ahead is braking, I need to know about it. If they're accelerating, I only need to know about if they have, for example, kidnapped my dog and I am in hot pursuit.   

       Given that the latter is unlikely to happen (our dog is very grumpy and remarkably stupid; I'd ask them for ransom to take it back), I'm not sure it's worth adding to the optical noise.

       At traffic lights, knowing the car infront's accceleration means, as a driver, you can stay closer and allow more people behind through. On jammed motorways, an indication of acceleration might make for a more gentle traffic waveform.

       Ground speed or gas/brake pedal ? On motorways I rarely touch the brake pedal unless I need to indicate my speed is rolling off. And its a custom to flash hazard lights when high speed traffic is approaching a block of traffic slowed (for some reason like merging) to sub 40mph.

       Also wrong. The primary cause of slow traffic is panic braking where people over-react to a brake light or over-accelerate and then brake rapidly when they don't judge it right.

       If we are reworking signalling then it needs to take one more thing into account - personal reaction times. Any kind of green light is dangerous unless it only illuminates within the parameters of someones reaction times. It would encourage acceleration even though the fall-out could not be coped with. For example -   

       The junction accident.   

       The car infront brakes to a stop a few metres before the turn. He's a hot-head and thinks he has a chance, he sees a gap and guns it, then realises he's not going to make it and brakes hard. Green light for the guy behind who is also a hot-head but not quite as sharp - smack !

       ^ I don't see your point. In that case, normally there would be a red light followed by nothing when he takes his foot off the brake and steps on the gas. In the case of a red/green/white indicator, there'd be nothing when his foot comes off the gas, then green when it hits the gas (and the wheels' rotational speed increases).   

       Oh, driver's input is also signalled so you can tap the brakes as a headsup.

       I've often thought that a sloping forehead would be a more desirable and selected-for characteristic. After all, it indicates less wind resistance and potentially greater speed. It also indicates more cranial capacity (if you assume the slope starts at the top at the same level as the flatter forehead, and extends forward as you measure downward). It also seems to be a style feature, in that many products have such aerodynamic design features, even if they're not designed to dyne through aero, they just look more up to date than boxy flat products.

       Nice idea, but this would never work - as you accelerate, the green light would become red-shifted from the perspective of the person behind you and they would just see a murky brown light.
