or a category based on themes lifted from popular culture/fiction |

If a joke gets common enough to make you think about giving it its very own category, maybe it's time to switch to something else. The device has become predictable, and is more often used by people who want to make sure they're funny than by people who actually thought of it afresh. |

so what's the etymology of that anyways ?... I recently re-read Tom Holt's "Earth, Air, Fire and Custard" |
|

You have a point [jutta]... I don't think this is one of my
best ideas... :^§ |
|
| |
The speed bumps idea is a quality idea that happened to use custard because of it's inherent properties - not because custard seems like a weird and funny basis for an idea. |
|
| |
I think what [jutta] is really getting at is that it's time to move on to jelly/jello based ideas. |
|
| |
I did jelly technology ages ago |
|

Jelly? Hmmm... I see your point, but blancmange seems far
superior in the fact that it is like jelly but *not* jelly :^) |

In a genuine idea featuring custard, it is used as an example of a common substance with the required properties. Such ideas fit into whichever category the item belongs in, like 'vehicle:car: speed bump' not what they are made of, which is why there isn't a 'Plastic' category. |

re: jutta's link.
I notice that, although described as a 'keen baker' (aren't we all?), the woman in question wasn't so keen as to actually spend a few minutes to make her own custard rather than traipse around the town for hours looking for a tin of custard powder. There's no hope for some people. |

OK, so not this, but "Halfbakery:Idea:non-Newtonian fluid themed"? That would imply that there were others. In fact, are there any non-custardy non-Newtonian fluid ideas on here? |
