Hallowe'en Dip

Just for Hallowe'en

Too much instant gratification around these days, so kids don't learn the meaning of disappointment.

The Hallowe'en Dip is just like a Lucky Dip except that the bags contain other things like jigsaw puzzles with a couple of pieces missing, banana peels, broken pairs of glasses, bottles of salt, mouldy sweets, dead rats etc.

Teach children the meaning of unrewarded effort, disappointment and bad luck. It'll save them a lot of pain when they grow up.

Ohh - I can actually see the cynicism and bitterness wafting off the screen to form a light mist!

I also suggest a day when adults get to legitimately play tricks on children; like driving them to school, but actually dropping them off in the wilderness, blindfolded and miles from home - or spiking their orange squash with vodka etc - that kind of thing - someone's bound to learn something in the process.

This requires a lot of effort! We're just going out that night.

(BTW where I live, if you don't hand over the cash - kids here want hard currency for Halloween - your windows will probably get broken. So I've been told!)

Pay 'em in U.S. dollars. That'll teach 'em.

Hey, [zen], see if you can catch any of that stuff - if you can bottle it, it might be worth something ...

Ha, you make it sound as though I think bitterness and cynicism are bad things!

[8th] not a bad idea, we can sell it alongside the Angostura.

Too much of it may have permanent effects, [zen].

Kids will, much to your chagrin, enjoy the whole thing. I remember my early christmases where my sister would gift wrap mundane things from around the house and lay them in my desk or at the foot of my bed. The joy of unwrapping an old coffee mug, or a nintendo game I already owned was palpable. + for going as far as dead rats.

One of my Uni contemporaries began a poem with the words "A lucky dip of breasts and razor blades...".

Pity the rest of the poem couldn't quite maintain the standard.

I actually tried this out at my youth club the other week... a kind of 'wasabi roulette' with 10 wasabi cakes and 60 safe ones. The icing was the same colour as the wasabi, so no-one could tell... there was a prize for whoever managed to swallow it.
