(this post will assume the car drives on the right side of the road. As they should!)

The left lane on a highway is known among other things as "the hammer lane"... meaning you drive fastest in the left lane. Why not make it official; Right lane max speed limit is 100kph (63mph). Middle lane is 120 kph (75mph). Hammer lane (left lane) is 150kph (95mph). These are just my suggested speeds... could probably be faster with todays cars.

I don't think my car will go fast enough for the hammer lane.

That's fine. You would be happy in one of the other two lanes. I've edited the post to reflect that these are not "minimum" speed limits they are maximums. You could still use the lane to the left of you as a passing lane. Just check your blind spot.

Calls for an Autobahn lane... with walls.

In the netherlands it is not allowed to actually drive on the left lane for extended periods. You should only use it to overtake someone and then go back right.

Furthermore I can't really explain what I think is wrong with this idea so I'll just fishbone.

When road conditions make it safe to drive at 95mph, you propose to funnel all the cars into the fastest lane until that lane becomes so crowded that 95mph is no longer safe, whereupon a game of chicken develops about who's going to drop back into the middle lane first. I'll take the train.

i don't care for your speed suggestions, but i would love to have a 'faster' lane. bun.

[pertinax] If so many people feel comfortable driving 95mph that the hammer lane becomes conjested, then obviously we are driving too slow as it is.

But the dilemna you pose is valid. A minimum distance between vehicles should be maintained. (technically there is already a law against tailgating). So, if the hammer lane is full, then you would need to wait for a slot to open up. It would be permissable to speed in order to reach, or decelerate from the lane speed to your left.
