Hologram Projector for PC

a new low cost perihiperal to add to the home/work computer station

there are several types of holographic projectors avialiable commercially but they are quite pricey and take specialist software and powerful hardware to run.

based on a similar idea by galukalock i think i have a low cost solution to mass market desktop holographic displays.

my idea consists of a lead glass block about 10cm cubed. the cube had tiny bubbles of noble gases in the afore mentioned invention. the gases are also excited by the action of lasers, one array on each side of the cube. the electronics are interfaced to the computer via usb or bluetooth.

the actual idea is not the projector its self but the application of cheap massed produced version compatible with a normal desktop computer.

i think if i had to develop this device i would start with designing software able to easily develop media for such a device. i think a special network communication protocol for 3d internet browsing would be cool to. something like http3d that communicates stuff like 3dml.

the developing of the actual projection device would be quite easy from what uncle google told me. the trick is to create cool software that can develop all the cool media, i don't think that this would be a huge challenge either.

it would be interesting to see how an affordable mass produced usb version would boost the gaming and advertising industries.

link up the galukalock idea please.

This is less the idea of a process or product, than the dream of such. [marked-for-deletion] Let's all. edit: mfd withdrawn, further critique below.

excuse me [loonquawl], it seems to me like this is an idea for for a product, since i cannot purchase one at the computer store currently.

perhaps you can name one product or process that did not first start as a dream of such.
codrakon, Aug 31 2009

So... your idea is to take an existing product, make it cheaper, and make more of it? Seems like not so much as a let's all but a WIBNI.
21 Quest, Aug 31 2009

       actually not.

my idea involves getting a lead crystal block, that has been permeated with certain noble gasses, that are excited by laser arrays in the dimensions necessary to produce a hologram.

i do believe that this would be suitable for a USB peripheral and would be economically viable for mass production, as well as software developers.

I think I misunderstood your post, then. It sounded to me like you were saying there are already glass cube hologram projectors available, and your idea was to make a cheaper, more user friendly version. I didn't realize the glass cube projector was the invention. If that's the case, then paragraph 4 is awfully misleading.

i agree [21 Quest], it is difficult to express myself. nevertheless, i still think some of my ideas are pretty cool. but alas i cannot vote for my own idea.

i tried not to emphasise the projector as the invention - since in one of the links - you will see that there are solutions similar to mine. however my design is probably cheap enough to mass produce, thus let me rephrase the idea as - build a glass cube hologram projector that can be produced cheap enough to mass produce for the desktop market.

please note: that using a glass cube that employs noble gases to produce a hologram when the gasses are excited by lasers is my original idea.

the post by galukalock was incidental because i decided to check whether this idea exists already, and Hologram Display was already there and uses a similar method.

as one might suspect i came across Hologram Display then thought of my idea. this is not how it happened.

i was at my friends house and saw one of these lead crystal blocks with a 3d image laser etched into it. the night before i was browsing lasers. it just happened that this is how i invented this thing.
codrakon, Aug 31 2009

ah, i did not get that the bubbled glass-block was your invention. I retract the mfd.

As to the viability of the concept: You'd need a way to have the laser reach their destination without interference by the multitude of gas/glass edges, every one representing a refracting surface. Then the light emmitted from the individual bubbles would have to dodge the same problems. Additionally, every bubble would emit into every direction, meaning any 3D body would have at least one surface facing you, emitting light, and one surface facing away from you, emitting light also, back-lighting the first surface (Princess-Leia-Effect). Solutions for sketchy, ghostly 3d already exists in a variety of guises, would be cheap to mass produce and seemingly has no market.

I retracted my fishbone. I'm staying neutral on this one.

what if they combined lcd and glass block, laminated in lcd sections and glass block sections?

the lasers could excite the bubbles and the lcd could block off light from the glowing pockets of gas. like a 3d monitor.
