It occurs to me that we rarely go to war with people who speak the same language we do... occasionally, but not that often, unless it's a civil war over another problem, like religion or ideology.
The obvious extension of this is to speed up the process of lingusitic homogenisation of the world's
peoples. Cultural homogeneity will soon follow.
I know there's a bleeding heart liberal outlook on preserving languages. Then, there's the French, who want theirs set in glass and kept in a museum so it can't be changes, but these people are exceptions to the rule: that we all should get along better and stop fighting.
Adopt a non-English speaker today, save the world from itself!
English is the most widespread language on Earth, at the moment... and we all have a pretty good grasp of it, already [link]

\\like religion or ideology\\. That right there, is the reasoning behing about 90% of all wars in history. It's only recently that we've taken to invading countries for their oil. |

This seems less a new idea and more an old idea (make everyone speak English) with a new and slightly illogical reason. Bit of a Let's All really. |
|
| |
I did not suggest that language was the reason, rather that inability to communicate effectively is the reason. |
|
| |
Let's All? I don't think so. More of a "What might be the result if''? |
|
| |
Or maybe "What might be the result if we all..."? I'm not calling this a Let's All UB. If I had, I'd have thrown in an MFD tag to go with it. I was just saying that it resembles one. |

And the invention is that we manage to stamp out most wars, by the simple expedient of commonising language and culture. |
|

Not yet been attempted by peacable means, to my recollection. |

So when are you gonna get a proper accent? :) |

//And the invention is that we manage to stamp out most wars, by the simple expedient of commonising language and culture...Not yet been attempted by peacable means...// The idea is fine, but just what do you think all those Catholic missionaries have been doing for the last millenium? Look how well that has worked out. Was the problem that they chose to use Latin as their unifying language rather than English? |

//Cultural homogeneity will soon follow//
You say that like it's a good thing. |

It is, in the context of this idea, [calum]. |

I disagree, though I may just be disagreeing to make a point about the utility of the scheme. |
