Cantilevered tracks with hanging down pods powered by people. Pods would be similar to recumbent bike or trike where people would use pedal power to get to places. Tracks would be two way system tracks hanging down from poles or suspended under bridges when crossing waterways. Pods would take 2 to 4 people and couild be linked together to form trains which would be more efficient than single pods. Fares would be much cheaper as less electricity and maintenance is required for low tech vehicles like these. Fares could be based on power output generated by rider. This would be easy achieve by onboard computer and swipe card system. Some people could be acting as rikshaw riders to assist lazy people or someone with mobility problems. Hilly cities would have power assist on uphills. Overtaking would be possible on shunt tracks past stations you don't need to stop on. Rikshaw riders would deliver empty pods to the stations where more capacity is needed. Or stronger riders could get credit to do this. System would reward people using their own power and as anything else would be just part of the solution to city transport problems.

Some mechanism should be installed by which, if you pedal, it's free, if you don't (you are "rickshaw'd" and you are able-bodied) you pay. The pedallers could power the uphill chain assists, by requiring excess pedalling to propel (i.e. more than is necessary to move their own truck), yes?

       + for real.

I found a couple of links. It's been thought of, and it's good idea, but it hasn't been done.

Geeze, I'm showing up in Google searches now!

You would get a refund for pumping. A printer can give you a card for your achievements during each ride. Young kids would do it as a summer job.

There used to be a pedal-powered elevated railway at Legoland Windsor, but I can't remember if it was a mono.
