Illuminate the moon like the death star

Just for one minute ... or day

  [vote for,

An ambitious crowd sourced project which over time funds and purchases hardware.

Version 1 of the hardware will be required to acquire the position of and track the moon and upon command illuminate said moon with an image of the Death Star at an agreed upon orientation, probably to make maximum use of preexisting shading.

However, an interlock mechanism will prevent all units from firing at the same time if sufficient illumination is not possible. A purchased unit even continually upgraded is therefore locked into a test cycle until the project has reached critical mass and is ready to go live.

As the megawatt-hours accumulate in electrical reserves and LED illumination power grows, at some point a website somewhere will spring to life and announce the first of many ...

"Illuminate the moon like the death star" days.

Will there be Tie fighters ? There must be Tie fighters too …

I know nothing of Tie fighters. Must be something to do with neckties I suspect. TIE fighters, now those I'm familiar with.

Forget trying to illuminate it. Simply pick it at it's brighest illumination and apply an image-compensating dimming filter where needed.

Wasn't there some crowdsourced project to get everyone to shine laser pointers at some part of the moon once?
MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 10 2017

I am very much in favour of projects that will outlive one's self but I'm not sure this is the one. My reason being, the humanity of Earth will need the Moon as a storage cupboard and putting stuff there is the priority (lights and all).

[+] sorta like those dimestore home security decals you put on the door "This Planet Protected By...", or a recording of a barking Doberman.

I've got sheep grazing up there...... need some warning time to get them penned up so as not to affect the illusion. :-) [+]

Just put some stormtrooper helmets on them, they'll be fine.

[zenzag] Worried about the illusion, what about bright flashes on your flock's mental health? Intelligent sheep would be a certain worry.

In many parts of Wales, sheep are considered highly intelligent.
MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 12 2017

       It's all relative.

For example, if the sheep are quite literally your relatives, it tells the disgusted and bemused observer as much if not more about you and your family* history as it does about the sheep.

Intelligent sheep just means the wolves have to create more elaborate psychological controls to get their way.
wjt, Aug 13 2017

//In many parts of Wales, sheep are considered highly intelligent.// Is that opening line of your lonely hearts advert? ha
xenzag, Aug 13 2017

That should actually read "In many parts of Wales, sheep are considered highly intelligent compared to other indigenous inhabitants" of course.
