Just pondering this the other day. Since inflation is directly related to growth of the money supply, why not do what little you can to slow it down? That's right, throw your change directly into the trash. I'm not talking anything bigger than a quarter, just your dimes, nickels and pennies. So what
if the net benefit is less than what you'd get if you saved all that money in a jar? At least you're doing your part to slow down inflation.

Well, for this to alter your regulator's calculation of 'money supply', you'd have to telephone your central bank each time you put some change in the trash and tell them. The portion of 'money supply', in its various definitions, that is represented by coinage in circulation is miniscule, so this is really half baked. |

[5th Earth] governments don't 'make money'. ... banks 'create' money through creating credit. Most 'money' in the world is just data bits on bank's servers. There are nowhere near enough paper/polymer bank notes in existence to cover all the 'money' on deposit in financial institutions. |

Or just get rid of pennies, Australia did, and so far, it's worked pretty well. |

And what about penny banks? A special bank where you could give your pennies to the armed forces, or something like that, they melt it down, and create bombs/ammo out of it. Doubt that it would work, though, especially since the army aren't exactly doing much these days, there aren't many wars on that we need to get involved with... |

Or, the pennies could be dropped onto hostile countries from helicopters. They wouldn't kill anyone, but they would hurt a lot and they would make the enemy soldiers look up to see what they are. Then, while the soldiers are distracted we can kill them. |

When your cow orker puts one of those cups for soda can tabs for the Ronald Mcdonald House in the staff lounge, put in pennies instead. (Not that this has anything to do with inflation, mind you, but rather it is just something useful way to dispose of pennies. A cupful of pennies is probably worth 10x more than a cupful of soda can tabs, after all.) |

One thing i do, esp. in the suburbs, where nobody seems to walk (they're all in cars), I drop change on the sidewalk, and then the rare pedestrian gets a nice little bonus to brighten their day. Some people do enjoy finding a "lucky penny". |
