I've watched the remarkable rise of popularity of Google Earth with interest.

I've also noticed that passengers in stricken airliners can watch their own impending demise through a camera mounted on the nose wheel of the aircraft as they come in to land.

Combining those two ideas I can see a market for high definition cameras mounted on the bellies of commercial airliners, that you can log into and watch the passing terrain as they fly over it.

Individually IP-addressable cameras would allow users from, all over the world to zoom in on the running of the bulls, in Pamplona, as QF971 passes over at midday.

If you can't visit London this year then you can still take a good look at it from the air, 500 times a day, if you want.

Heck, we can even add bombing simulators, if the flyover country permits.

Somehow in our current climate I doubt they would permit it.

Mapquest used to offer the same service at better resolution. Did they pull it for terror fears or something?

Dunno. I do know that it's very difficult to get a decent Google Earth shot of my parents' house. They live less than a kilometre from a major army base.

//add bombing simulators, if the flyover country permits// hmm, there's a thought - given practice, the assailant will be more likely to hit their intended target, rather than hitting me by accident.
Depends on the assailant, I guess - I remember hearing someone say that 'smart bombs' don't get better with practice.

I like the idea and it may be possible soon as some companies have put mobile phone transmitters in their planes so you can still talk on a flight (I will be avoiding these flights like the plague). It would not be difficult to use the same technology to send a video to the internet.

I used to think it would be good to have a camera on the front of a train. I then heard each driver hits about 2 people a year (not sure if thats on average or just on certain lines) so the companies probably dont want passengers to see this.
