Having been a little busy recently, I finally took a weekend off and discovered something that had been there all along: people mow their lawns at odd times of the day, all weekend.
To minimise the disruption of peace and quiet (and a few other benefits), I would solicit the help of television programmers
to ensure there is no sport, no interesting documentary, no important event, no news program aired during a four hour period each second Saturday. This time will be set aside for the mowing of lawns.
There can be similar schemes set up for ironing, washing dishes, darning socks, taking kids to play sport, etc.
End benefit?
1. More social interaction, more neighbo(u)rliness all 'round.
2. Fewer squabbles over delineation and timing of duties. "Time to mow the lawn, Honeybunch. Evereyone in the street is waiting for you."
3. Every second Sunday, your entire neighbo(u)rhood looks immaculate.

Why not? It could be fun, given the competitive nature of humans. We could see this leading to the lawnmowing Olympics. |
|
| |
No. It's not obligatory, just restricted to the time allocated. If you mow slowly then you won't, possibly, get all of your lawn mown. |

Freedom is a tenuous thing, Mephista. |
|
| |
Guy: Hey, wanna go out for dinner on Thursday night? |
|
| |
Girl: Erm...I'm....washing my hair. Sorry. |
|
| |
Guy: No, heh, you must be confused - that's Wednesday night you're thinking of. So what about it? |
|
| |
If you do enough rain checks you'll know when you'll need to water. |
|
| |
Mephista, that's because I never told you. |
|
| |
I have to mow my lawn at least once a week, sometimes more often. I've already started. |
|
| |
Do the lawn mowing services have to operate in the same time frames? Probably would put them out of biz. They go from one lawn to the next, nonstop. |
|
| |
What the hell is that? At attempt at marking for deletion, perhaps? |
|
| |
Georgethe, being 'baked' is not grounds for deletion, you may be surprised to learn. |
|
| |
(Mephista, Apr 23 2002 ) So we are all supposed to do exactly the same things at exactly the same times? |
|
| |
Fat chance - I can never get anyone to do anything at the same time as me (must do something about this pain in my elbow) |

[link] so if a few kids in the UK all jumping at the same time can affect the Richter Scale, what would happen to the planet if we all mow the lawn at the same time - perhaps all the rabbits in the world will go mad or all our hair will fall out. particularly as all the major planets are aligned mysteriously at the moment too. spooky!! |
|
| |
Just what I was thinking, bristolz. It all sounds like a hideous nightmare to me. Unca 'Bubba, you get scarey when you eat too much cheese. |
|
| |
Aaahhh, that's the problem! Thanks, doc. I'll do the prune thing right away. (Does anyone remember Prune?) |
|
| |
Bris, pure genius. I've seen the error of my ways. |
|
| |
GTR, what the hell is that [m-f-d-b-b]? Can't you get your lawnmower to start? It's Wednesday, you fool. No mowing 'til Saturday. |
|
| |
The other major problem with this barely eighth-of-the-way baked idea is that just when you think getting the television networks to agree to avoid good programming for any given period of time is a no-brainer (an idea that seems baked to a crisp to me), some rogue network (like FOX) will come along and aire some brilliant Andy Richter type show that only aires during the time set aside for lawn mowing (or driving home from work, as the case may be). |
|
| |
The non-mowers in the house would have to hide out in the basement to get away from the cacophony. All the noise would set off my felines and then there would be catophony as well. |
|
| |
Unabubba, you have a point there. The noise factor just seems to be increasing in urban areas. I finally bought an industrial-sized box of disposable foam earplugs for routine use in the cityscape. A lot of the excess noise comes from passing SUVs, with their big, nobby and therefore noisy tires. But home for me is a mostly quiet place, and someone mowing a lawn nearby is cause for investigation and visiting. And the birds can still hear each other here, even though they don't hear so good in the first place. |
|
| |
[mrthingy], I've done away with all but a loungeroom sized lawn. It's about 20 x 12ft at its widest point. So 3min with an electric Flymo and I'm done. |
|
| |
I use less water that way. Just enough lawn for the kids to play upon. |
|
| |
By a bizarre coincidence, that lawn would fit neatly into my lounge room, with just a *teeny* border of pansies around it. |
