Levitating Sausages

Strong, Static and Electromagnetic

The sausages are cooking under the grill and are almost ready for serving. Open the cupboard and grab one of those electromagnetic plates out*.

Put the plates on the table and plug them in. Listen for the hum as the electromagnetism builds.

Go to serve the sausage on the plate but ... wait on.... what the *&£$! The sausages levitate due to their water content and the presence of something strong, static and electromagnetic.

Children smile. A wonderful meal was had by all.

* You'll need an iron plate with plenty of wire and power. I'll leave you to choose your preferred design.

Nice, but how do you cut them?

I think you need a really high water content [jtg], although I admit it would be fun. you might be able to get levitating jelly/jello ?
Also you'd have to have quite a beast of an electromagnet, and I'm under the impression that they don't do nice things to your head in the long term.
p.s. surely food:delivery:airbourne

[squeak] suggest, for safety reasons, that only finger foods are levitated due to the difficulties in cutting it.

What about electromagnetic tables at Burger King with levitating burgers. No more dirty tables.

This would work under the grill also, with the levitating sausages constantly turning themselves over and therefore cooking perfectly. If the magnetism was just right, they could also be made to drop down as the water content is reduced when cooked through.

[neilp]. Jelly, sushi, vegetables, most fruits would all be suitable.

I love that category. What chance do you think?

+ points all round it seems.

[suction] nice product extension. I like it.

Are these superconducting sausages? And if so, shouldn't they be frozen rather than cooked?

You could have a special weenie coil for each sausage. It becomes an electromagnet through induction, and hovering would be controlled by modulation of the fields.
Amos Kito, Aug 13 2003

[amos] as per link, the levitatee should only have a fair water content. No need for superconductivity here.

Now if you could just find a way to steer the sausages mouthwards we could stop wasting all the energy that we expend on cutting up, pronging, lifting etc. of food. We could all become 20 stone sedentary blimps, hurray!

Behind a twenty stone blimp
twenty stone blimp--pounds you put on
