Light My Inches

A light that projects a measuring grid when turned on

No more carying the tape measure or level around. Simply screw in our "Light My Inches" into the socket, and project a measuring grid onto the desired surface, the entire room if need be.

Per phoenix's annotation, use IR distance measurers to properly calibrate focusing.

A good loo light for nighttime dimension reassurance?

Combine a vector graphics capable laser and IR distance measurer. You'd want a wide field of projection (and you'd need to compensate for that). It wouldn't be much good on unflat surfaces (or around corners) and you'd have to aim it pretty straight, but it probably has some applications.

I have thought about a device, almost exactly as [phoenix] mentions, that would project a grid as a guide for ceramic floor tile installations.

Tabs -- I think a device that does proper optics can be built, as phoenix mentions. It maybe interesting to have multiple gradations, so as you focus (or unfocus), you cover a larger area but still with proper measurements

       If you say so, [Tabs].

No more carrying the tape measure around. Simply carry around the 'Light My Inches' instead. More complicated, requires power source, can't measure shaded areas and doesn't provide that alarming schwoooosh you get when the razor-edged tape measure retracts. Bone.

dobtabulous -- I'm thinking for large scale work you put a special light into the light socket. The entire room looks like the holodeck.

Or, for smaller scale, something like the link

Good idea, but won't work unless it features something along the lines of phoenix's calibrator. Given that distance locators exist, you could add this as a feature.

Any one see the History Channels piece on measuring US Marines for uniforms by using a laser measuring tool.? It scanned them head to toe and came up with the correct sizes. Same technology applied to making custom action figures.

Well, if its light based, then when it comes to marking, or other surface-related activities, then couldn't shadows become a real problem? I'm thinking tracing projector-like problem.
Letsbuildafort, May 14 2004

Not sure I understand -- are you saying as you're nailing the nail in you're obscuring the ruler?

I would think you can mark just fine -- your shadow does not completely darken the wall you're working on, nor would it in this case.
