The winners mount the steps and receive their medals; the anthems play; SWISH-THUD, the gold medallist vanishes into oblivion.

Now, the field is clear at the next Olympics for a different competitor to shine ...

       Why? The way I see it, you're the best until somebody else beats you. Ergo, the current best needs to compete.
Otherwise, you get the usual "everyone's a winner" mentality that discourages anyone from trying.
(The other side of the coin is casinos: if you're too good at winning, they don't want you to come back...)
