...OK, I'm not old enough to have been a hippy, but I've known more than a few, and this is an age-old idea whose time has come.

The "medical marijuana" movement is spreading, and popular support for legalization and regulation is at an all-time "high." The health risks of marijuana are lower than tobacco because the smoker inhales less of the stuff. Folks are tired of paying incarceration costs for petty dope smokers. The growers would be able to stay in business. Government would collect tax revenue.

Grandfather the crop-swap in. It's a "win-win" proposition.

hemp has almost no thc, and smoking pounds of it would have no affect (except for lung cancer) it is still illegal for several reasons: a)in hawaii, were i live, hemp would grow 17 feet tall. it is identicle to marijuana visually....what percent of hemp would be actual hemp, and not it's saptiva cousin? b) In hawaii a large percent of politicins have cousins who grow "the crypt"....anyone who knows anything about growing "cronic" knows that growers kill all the male plants....this is to prevent pollination. with no pollination, the female plants flourish. because legal hemp growers would allow male plants to grow, the growers would have to work alot harder. c)see above reason, but take out the "have cousins who" d) see above, but replace "have cousins who" with "know many of the voters" (disclaimer: I have never grown, smoked, or sold any drug. i learned all of this from my 10th grade science class at Kauai High School) (disclaimer 2: I have no, wish to have no, an intend to not have any school spirit. KHS sucks)

Have you ever seen the World War 2 "Hemp for Victory" adds? They kill me. Apparently Hemp (Made from the Cannabis plant) is great for making rope, as well as clothing.

// growers kill all the male plants //

Is this true? I thought all plants reproduced asexually, and there was no 'male and female'. Just one plant that provided all the ingredients to make baby plants.

I'm sure that's what they taught us at school anyway...

Look at all those croissants. This idea would be absolutely savaged to a pulp if posted new today. I blame GWB.

Something from history, And I quote" The first two pumping engines on Watt's improved plan were produced in 1776, a 1,270 mm (50in) cylinder pumping engine for a colliery at Tipon and a 965 mm (38in) blowing engine--that is, an engine which forced air rather than pumped water--for John Wilkinson's blast furnaces in Shropshire. The connection with Wilkinson is important because, a year earlier, he had invented the boring mill for machining smooth the internal surfaces of cylinders. Clearly, with the Watt engine it was no longer possible to seal the piston with water, so Wilkinson's invention was essential to the development of the species. To maintain the seal in a bored cylinder while minimizing friction, -Watt put a periperal groove round the piston and packed it with Hemp soaked in tallow for lubrication.- By means of a junk-ring bolted down on top, the packing was compressed outwards so that it pressed lightly against the cylinder wall. Though it meant raising the cylinder cover every few weeks for men to enter the cylinder and tighten the bolts, or to repack the piston, the arrangement worked perfectly well with low steam pressures and persisted for many years. The two 1776 engines proved an instant success." end quote. these guy's worked with hemp and started an industial revolution, obviously it was a good material to work with, otherwise they would have used something different.
