Firstly, thou shalt tightly bind a pad of fine sponge, late of the Mediterranean waters, to the tips of thine arrows. Take care first to remove the warheads from them, lest they inflicteth cruel wounds upon thine targets. Then dipp'st each sponge in a bowl of the blood of a slaughter'd swine.

They shall make an unmistakable mark upon thine enemy's robes and trappings, should they impact against him. Thou may also perform a similar action with thine pikes, spears, javelins and maces, to similar end.

If thou fashionest small, hollow'd globes, not larger than the egg of a pigeon, from the gelatinous product of boil'ed hooves of cows then fill also those with hog's blood, they shall make a pleasing mark upon thine enemy, if thrown with true aim from a sling against his person.

If time permitteth, thou may wish also to fashion several hundreds of such globes, to then load into trebuchets or siege engines. Such weapons may lay fallow many of thine enemy's vassals in one fell swoop.

By these means and presents herein, thou mayest bring realistic gore in great quantity to thine upcoming mediæval tournament or battle, with great ease and little risk to life and limb.

Thou shouldst undoubtedly attract a fine quantity of mirth and merriment from thine registered participants and their entourages, courts, urgers and followers.

Nope, it was 4am on a Sunday. Why would I have anything better to do?

       Bonus points for ligature usage

Use the blood-filled bladders of mice (and other small creatures).

Ligature notwithstanding, [UB], this is both halfbaked and baked (see original idea for instances of bakedness). Sorry.[-]

You might be able to argue that the joust was an early (the earliest?) form of paintball, what with their splintering lances and protective face-gear.

The problem with simulated warfare is that nobody is mortally terrified enough for it to be realistic i.e. it ends up being 'fun'. One of the major deciders in warfare must be the stern grit and determination of the troops to stand in the face of overwhelming odds.

When you stand on a field with thousands of angry men in front of you, and nothing particularly unpleasant behind you (in relative terms at least) it must be tempting to slope off for a quick hide.

Kingdoms must have been won and lost on this last aspect of human rationalism - just thinking about it baffles and confuses, whilst also filling me with the most disconcerting sense of admiration.

Bugger! I've just bunned the other idea and will remove this one. I had not seen it before, so it now has 54 buns.

I actually went through the categories looking for prior art and obviously missed [DF]'s effort.
