Hear the private and the public

A person wearing headphones can hear what no-one else does. But sometimes a person wearing headphones also wants to hear the outside world - the headphones are so that others do not need to listen to ones private music.

These headphones have exterior microphones, so in addition to hearing your music you can hear what is going on in your environment.

Now if we could only switch repeated annotations on and off...

Over ear headphones are large enough to have a small parabola focusing the sound to make it possible to hear far away conversations.

I thought some hip young thing would come along and link up how this has existed since 2002. Failing that - Max, you'll do. But the link?

Non-switchable versions are commonly what is known as 'closed' or 'open' headphones. If you sit in a corner and don't like surprises, you probably want to buy open headphones.

Closed headphones are for total immersion.

Switchable are the noise-cancelling variety with external microphones, but that is more high tech than just an open or closed plastic membrane.
