Roland stood, ramrod-straight, his back pressed against that of his adversary for Nancy's affections, the scoundrel Kenneth. This was it; this was possibly the defining moment of his manhood; the test of his mettle; the bright, shining... sound of a voice cut through his reverie...

"Gentlemen! Three paces away then turn and at each other!"

Roland's ready right hand was clammy, dripping with a dark, foul ichorous goo that smelled of ancient fish and primaeval ooze and... "Two!"... shit... "THREE!"...

Roland spun, and ducked to his right slightly, launching the contents of his right hand: A large, dead squid dripping in fishguts and squid ink and indelible dye, as hard as he could at the dastardly Kenneth...

       Are Squids really modern?
I assumed, like most things in the sea, they'd been around since Dinosaur times.

Squid and octopi are ancient in their form and so on - but to use them as projectiles is a recent innovation.
Jinbish, Oct 24 2009

Back when octopuses were employed in menial labour for getting things out of small spaces and general octocatburglary, it wasn't uncommon to discipline an octopus or squid by having to fire them.

I used a squid because it's no longer OK to shoot people. That's all.

It seems this is a more direct way than the duels using MS Outlook cc: "The World". More fun* to witness, as well.

       * As long as it's upwind: can't stand the smell of fish.
