Watching a documentary on the destruction of Pompeii, in 79AD, I saw some amazing things.
It occurred to me that it would be possible to excavate large chambers in the ground, ahead of lava flows, especially the fast flows of paehoehoe type magma, and allow the magma to fill the chambers, to later
cool.
This would be not dissimilar to the "lost wax" sculpting technique.
The potential result? Massive, beautifully formed sculptures of animals, abstract forms and people, or whatever else you want.
Either excavate after the flow has cooled or allow future geologists and archaeologists to marvel at their beauty. Undara

perhaps you could make a giant croissant. |

The Undara Lava Tubes are a pretty big speed bump. [link] |

I was thinking more like massive statuary. [link] |

[neilp] But lava isn't a dilative material.
Molds for multiple lava bases for lava lamps. So many possibilities. I like this one. This idea might make 2.5 small croissants. [+] |

[Unabubba] Undara rocks - I went there last year
it's inordinately expensive, but impressive all the same
. |
|
| |
It's the time for which you have to pay people, as it's 3-4 hours from Cairns, that makes it expensive. |
|
| |
It's a pretty amazing formation. Did you get to see the sandstone monolith that broke away from the escarpment in the area and slid 15km, before it came to rest? |
|

Mmm ... warm, lava busts. |
|

Hey, mate, put your tongue away. |

Would make for an interesting excavation, with the statues under the rock. |

It won't work. But it is a fun idea! |

You can't control the direction or volume of molten lava (at least, not to this precision). Too little flow, and the mold doesn't fill. Too much and it's covered by tons of thick layers of solid rock. You can't mine an active volcano to make the mold -- the ground's too hot. You need that heat to make a good mold, since lava will clot and fold on cool soil. Even if you make a perfect statue, you've got to dig that brittle rock without destroying it, before a subsequent eruption completely buries it. |

But I still want to see the statues when you're done. |

Was trying to find the artist who works
with lava but anyway. + |

WoW! If u r gonna build a house near a "may be" active volcano, excavate an exact shape some miles away. If at all you do get a volcano (and u survive) you have a house ready in a few months!. All you have to do is excavate the house made of lava once it cools down. |

Perhaps a Pompeii-style pyroclastic flow to create the lost-wax moulds, then a full-blown lava flow to fill 'em up? |

Using explosives? (There is an unhealthy relationship between me and things that go bang, but the kind that goes, the little voices tell me to blow things up...) |
