As we read, we read in an inline progression direction,
for English happens to be left to right (which is basically
backwards and incorrect and uncomfortable).
As we run out of space on a line, we go to another line.
line is traditionally in English, underneath. Thus, the
direction is top to bottom. Each block of lines
such as a paragraph progresses in a block progression
My proposal is to change the way all writing in English is
(and has ever been done). Make new lines go above the
current line. Make new paragraphs go above the existing
paragraphs. Change the block progression direction from
to bottom, to bottom to top.
There are several good reasons for this. Firstly, as we read,
we progress into the future, as far as a temporal analogy
the construction of our comprehension of the topic in hand
concerned. As things stand now, we progress into the future
of a book or sheet of paper downwards, thus the future is
increasingly down. If the paper or book is held in a lap or
chest height, the future is ever toward us, our egocentric
This is contrary to how most people actually analogise the
future. Most people have a temporo-spatial analogical
arrangement in their mind that indicates future as out
there, and the more the future, the more out there
(usually straight ahead, but not always). When we read, we
should be reading further out.
Thus when we hold a book in our hand, the progression
direction should be from bottom to top, leading us away
us now and here to further then and there as the
text unfolds (even if it is actually referring to the past
almost never refer to past events by relating their
backwards by running the story timeline backwards, i.e.,
toward our egocentric location).
The other good reason is that the internet, due to idiotic
design of people who are basically stupid*, is full of
messaging and user-generated content presentation that
progresses upward. Everything seems to run in the incorrect
direction. You start reading comments it refers to a non-
existent comment. Then you read another. It does too.
a while later the non-existent comment suddenly becomes
existent. This is incorrect. Stupid. Stop doing it.
Well, if you dont stop doing it, then do this. Run text from
bottom to top. Read upward, not downward. Start at the
bottom and read toward the top.
* (look at numeric pagination for a commonplace example
idiot design) these idiots spend all day sitting around
agreeing with each other how great and smug they are with
their UX/UI jobs. Idiots. Fucking idiots. Always refusing to
give me work which would equate to me earning money.
Fucking stupid morons. Fucking die.
