The people who provide at-home care for relatives suffering from Alzheimers, dementia, etc... will be familiar with the problem of having them get up and roam around the house at night unattended. This can cause serious safety issues if the patient also tends to collapse now and then (or get into the
knife drawer). A simple solution would be to create a two-foot wide section of security carpet that could be laid down around the edge of their beds. That way when they stepped on it the pressure would trigger a silent light alarm in the caretaker's bedroom, letting them know their relative was going for a walk again. (If a husband and wife were taking turns on night duty the alarm light could be put on whoever's side of the bed whose turn it was to get up that night.) [link]

Seems reasonable. Door reed switches don't work? |
|

Hadn't heard of reed switches before (never had a need to look into the subject). Would you happen to know if they one where you could add it to a door and then set it up so it would turn on a portable light in another room? That would be quite useful at the moment. |

You could use those ding-dong beam switches like they have at Radio Shack. |

waugs - Need something that will have a greater chance of only waking up the person on one side of the bed. Now that I think of it, a pillow with a small vibrator in it might do the trick. The patient trips the alarm, the person using the pillow that night feels the vibration and gets up to take care of them. This would let the other person keep sleeping. |

I just can't wait to read what [po] has to say about this. |

You can use the ding-dong beam switch to trigger whatever you want. Having your system wake only one person in a two-person bed is a different problem altogether. |
