Night Vision Windshield

Avoid collisions with animals

Where I drive (upstate New York), there’s a significant danger of deadly collisions with deer, which overpopulate the area. They’re especially difficult to detect (until it’s too late) at night.

Those infra-red (or whatever they are) glasses used in the movies, and by the military? Use the technology in windshields for avoidance of warm-blooded creatures crossing the road. I imagine seeing, around the bend, color-outlined deer-shapes, allowing the driver to adjust speed and heading until the danger is passed.

Precise implementation of this technology is not known to me. Anybody else?

Annotation:

Night Vision technology has already been implemented by GM. Since the 2000 model year the Cadillac DeVille has had the option of adding a Night Vision system. The system uses an advanced infrared camera and a HUD (head-up display). Unfortunately It's only available in the DeVille and Being a Cadillac it doesn't come cheep(Over $50k). For more information see the [link].

you could buy night vision goggles, and bolt them to the front of a helmet?

the bike helmet visor will be much easier than the windshield, because of how the information is displayed.

You are trying to display an overlay, which must be lined up in-between the viewer and the object with reasonable accuracy. If it is only a highlight/outline then total accuracy is less important than if you were trying to provide full vision without blurring/doubling what is already able to be seen. A highlight would probably be a basic rectangle, identified as moving differently thant he rest of the picture be a real-time computer image analysis. It sounds complicated, and it is, but that part of it is already kinda baked. just look up "paintball turret" on youtube.

for the highlight, a display algorithm based on the assumption of where the average driver's head would be located, with at most a height adjustment would suffice. For the full image it would need to actively track where the driver's eyeballs are located.

The bike visor you could get away with something much simpler, basically traditional night vision goggles in a better package. Some inexpensive ones came with the game Modern Warfare 2 but the low res might not be suitable for biking above a certain speed, def not safe for car speeds. But they would be a good starting point to try it out.

sai, this is more of an ideas website than a "please help me wid my project" sort of a site, though it's an interesting idea and perhaps you should post it independently here?

Also, just a heads-up, people here tend to be a bit pedantic about grammar and language, if u c what I mean.

How about a system that reads the infrared images, and then spotlights the objects of interest?

//... I want to "implement" this idea and not leave it as an idea alone//
Pssst - it's already been done.

and why would you put quotes around "implement" if you just mean "implement" ?
