No-Fly Ballcap

Can also work for hats with a full brim

This idea was inspired today when my ballcap (the only kind of hat I ever wear) was nearly blown off by the wind. I say nearly because I managed to grab it just before lift-off was achieved.

This invention is very simple, and works on the same principle as the skirt that goes around the bottom of NASCAR vehicles and street racers' cars. The brim of the hat has little hinged panels, around the edges that fold up inside when not in use. As soon as you feel wind starting to pick up, or before you open your windows while driving, lower the panles, which are about 1/2 inch wide, to form a skirt around the permiter of the brim. This skirt not only adds weight to the brim, which helps in its own way, but it also blocks the flow of air under the brim, preventing it from being blown off your head.

Another benefit of this innovation is that the panels can be made of tinted plastic or polycarbonate, which prevents it from obstructing vision and allows it to be used on very sunny days to reduce glare while driving or walking toward the sun.

Wouldn't adding solar panels both give you enough weight and allow you to recharge minor batteries on a sunny day?

With the brim you would alter the aerodynamics of the cap, namely giving it more drag - i am not convinced this would make the cap less prone to take off (The umbrellas that feature ~20cm wide bands of clear plastik as a skirt around the edge (never knew what they were actually meant to do) have even more drag than the ones without (they folded less easily, though)). Could you bake it a quarter further, with some tape and cardboard, and tell of the results?

The cap-with-foldable-visor idea i like, incredibly nerdy and i cannot imagine what it could be used for, but anyways. [+]
