…no no, lower… After about an hour of this, anger sets in. My husband decides to go back to work. He is just SO impatient.
Hanging pictures can be a test for some couples, with even an inch to the left or right creating discord. It is much easier for one person (me) to make all the decisions.
But how?
This invention is a video cam with a suction cup or tripod mount. With goggles having a tiny viewer wirelessly linked to the camera. So now I can be in both places at once. What do I need him for?
There is an additional neat feature to simplify the placement of the nail. Put a red dot sticker on the front of the picture where the nail should be placed. When I have the picture exactly right, I freeze frame the image using a voice command (or mouth clicker, or whatever). Now the freeze frame of me holding the picture in exactly the right place is overlaid with the real time image of me dangerously tottering on a ladder with nail and hammer in hand. In the viewer I can see when I’ve got the nail exactly on the red dot. And wham, perfecto!
(And there are many other uses for this, I'm sure.)

Laser level, mounted on a tripod with a 3-axis head. Works like a charm. That's how I do it. |

Stretch wire, by holding painting by wire. Mark distance from top of painting to apogee of triangle formed by wire. Add this distance to the distance yyou wish the top edge of your painting to be below the ceiling. Add hook at this point, ensuring bottom of hook is the lowest point you desire. Next painting! |

As for level... use your eye, or a spirit level along the bottom edge, or side, of painting |

.6 : 1.0 : 1.6
Once you understand how it woiks for practical poirposes, no more fuss and bother. Your art, etc. will be in the right place. |

I am fanatical about how paintings are hung. We have quite a lot of them, some of which are taking up all of the available space on the walls of a fairly large house as I write this. |

We set a standard height from the bottom of the cornice. All paintings hang at that height. They are centred on the spaces in which they hang, or in the space between one and the next. |

My wife is an artist. She makes a good living from her artistic ability. She collects portraits and still lifes. |

I collect an eclectic mix of artforms: Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints), bonsai, modern sculpture, 19th century landscapes... |

It helps, when you rotate paintings, to have a standard by which you display them, otherwise they end up rather messy. |

<aside> My dad was once charged with the task of hanging a mirror in our kitchen. He tool the opportunity to show me how a spirit level works, discussed the fact that most houses are not quite level, explained that the ceiling and the floor weren't really parallel and that you needed to use rawl plugs for certain wall types. |

Taking as many of the above factors into account, he then expertly hung the mirror up.
"Tell me son, you've watched me for the last 10 minutes - is this mirror straight?"
"Yup", I replied.
"I think so too - now go get your mother" he said with a wry smile.
I got my mum, who entered the room, immediately going to the mirror:
"That's lovely Pete - really nice - I'll just..." - and proceeded to adjust the mirror to her liking. |
