There’s no denying that Recommend Dietary Allowances (RDA’s) are a useful feature when buying food. But they can be quite confusing (e.g. something that contains 50% of your daily fat is considerably worse than something that contains 50% of your daily Vitamin C, as the latter is in far fewer products than the former), difficult to work out totals for an entire day, and quite subjective (the intake for a 7 stone woman would be noticeably different from that of a 20 stone man). This is where the wonder that is the internet steps in.

Upon setting up a free account for this website, the user enters in their height, gender and weight. They can then enter their planned meals each day. The user inputs the ingredients and/or product names. The website will then cross reference the entrys against a large database of product/food nutritional information (this wouldn’t be hard to achieve; almost all products now have this information on the label, it would only require a trip to a decent supermarket). If the product isn’t found then a list of potentially similar products will be offered for the user to choose from, and a request will be made to the site administrators to add the specific information (thus over time the database would become more complete). The user will also be able to indicate portions (e.g. ½ a tin of tuna, ¼ of an iceberg lettuce).

The system will then add the totals of the food that the user will eat and output a total result of what percentages of their RDA (as identified by their height and weight), they are planning to eat. It will also make helpful suggestions for additions or substitutions to the meals. For example “try using chicken instead of beef, it contains less fat and more protein” or “to add carbohydrates to your day, include a small salad with your dinner”.

A version that includes food from restaurants would be possible but would use considerably more resources
