Partial Translation

Partial Translation for people with some knowledge of Source Language

I developed a partial translation system for my MSC. The idea was that to read fluently you need a huge vocabulary. If you don't have this vocabulary reading is really difficult if not impossible in a foreign language. I created a system that tried to do a word for word translation but only translated the low frequency words, which are in general less likely to be known to non-native speakers. The system I built is only a prototype and I haven't really got around to improving it.

Try this one http://www.ccl.umis...n_in_CALL/set2.html

Or this one http://mull.ccl.umi...ranslation_in_CALL/
Sounds excellent [squeak, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 06 2004]

Another approach that might appeal to the same users. It's more complicated, but it offers idiom translation as well as word-for-word. [beauxeault, Oct 04 2004]

If it exists, it doesn't belong here.

       Broken link.

What about works in progress or half implemented prototypes, phoenix?
humanzee, Aug 07 2003

Ah, great, now everyone can speak like my old Physics teacher...

[tobyp] - you're here. I want to see your program! Please fix the link.

       hmmphh..

it seems to take ages to load maybe the server is sleeping. Try it and then leave it to chug along in a spare windoe for 10 minutes, then try it again later. I'll have a word with sys admin and see if he can get it to respond quicker.

Welcome [tobyp]. I see you're at UMIST from the link (still can't get it to work). )I graduated from UMIST last year and did machine translation and theoretical linguistics and other torturous things.I would be very interested to see your system and your premise appears sound so please fix the linky, please.

I always found it amusing that the lifts hardly ever worked and the computers were always knackered (technical term) and the library card thingy never let me in at the *Institute of Science and Technology*

       Gotcha

//Toby P**** will be bringing *inexpensive* expertise //

       Are you mad?

       Try links now, interested people.

As far as I can see [tobyp], this differs from existing pre-editing in that it is purely vocabulary based (?). If this is correct then you get a plus from me. Would certainly increase reading speed.

squeak, it is a word for word dictionary look-up system. If you want to learn English why translate any of the english syntax, grammaticality into german syntax etc.. word to word is best I think. For some translations there are several german alternatives. Squeak should I recognise you?
humanzee, Aug 08 2003

Probably not. I only joined for the last year.

I think this would help me learn Italian (+).

The target audience for this idea might also be interested in my Babelshark idea (link).

[squeak] Gotcha? Ever live in Regensburg? If so my spies serve me well. and as to whether I'm mad or not, well i'm not the one who wants to live in a big window box am I ;-)
humanzee, Aug 08 2003

[tobyp]. Yep. Still live there too. How the hell didya work that out?
squeak, Aug 11 2003

Nice nice nice!!! This would be very useful for me.
Pericles, Aug 11 2003

[squeak]Well seeing as I play badminton with about half the department. It wasn't hard to find out, particulary since you were only here for a year and mentioned two of the courses you'd taken, it took about 5 mins.
humanzee, Aug 12 2003

       Damn, you're good.
squeak, Aug 12 2003

That's a bit unfair isn't it [tobyp]? You against half the department.
