Pet Chip Cat Flap

The catflap that knows

There are several catflap mechanisms available.

Open : The flap operates in either direction all the time

Switch : Some kind of switch allows the cat owner to opt for only out, only in, in and out or closed.

Magnetic : Use a collar to recognise your cat and open accordingly

The switch and open mechanisms allow any cat to wonder in or out which is less than ideal. The magnetic option is better, but cats can lose their collars, or in the case of young Pete and Dud (my two kittens), they don't like wearing them.

The solution lies within. Both my two cats have an identichip which is a unique reference. I propose a catflap that can be programmed to recognise Pete and Dud and opens/closes accordingly.

I worry that Pete wants to come in as Dud goes out and they end up a mangled mess - only kidding.

cats have a peculiar relationship with doors that borders on religious fanaticism

I'm trying to get them to implement this system at work for opening the doors instead of the rfid tags that a lot of fellow employees keep losing.

RFID for cats ! genius.. I wish I'd thought of that. Oh hang on I did think of that. scandal. RFID labelled croissant for you.

A good idea although I suspect that more pedantic cats may wander in and out, rather than wonder. Reducing the need for a collar is good as the less coordinated cat-about-town can risk strangulation if a collar catches on a branch or suchlike.

There's an image recognition researcher who built a cat door that works by scanning the "profile" of the incoming animal and "recognizing" the ones that are allowed in the house. The neat part about that implementation is it can also disallow entry if the cat has prey in its mouth, so no more rat carcasses in the house. See link.

[krel] top link. nice bit of work with Flo this. However, don't many cats look similar in profile? I know that my two do. All said, I like the anti-kill facility that the linked flap provides.
jonthegeologist, Sep 17 2003

He seems to have been able to crack that issue, if you go to the link on that site titled "Flo Watch" the system seems to be able to distinguish between the two cats that live in his house.

Here I sit, three years later thinking that I should do something about something I had thought of years ago. A RFID cat flap. I wondered, how many people had thought of the idea? I searched and immediately found this. Lo and behold, the world has many great minds constantly thinking alike! Simon. New Zealand.

I came up with an idea similar and had a search, here I am! The other results did not yield a single implementation of the "Chip-Door". I think it would fly with cat lovers, we all RFID our cats. "Arnie's dad"

I used to have a pet chip. I kept it on my shoulder.

There is already a cat flap out there which does this, I've seen them on sale here in Guernsey, they're called petporte. Don't think they do one for dogs though, it uses the RFID thingy in the cat to unlock the cat flap.

good to see someone's built it. note though [guernseyman], this idea was written in 2003
jonthegeologist, Oct 19 2006

After hearing the cat flap go a few moments ago with both my cats in sight (neither of which will tolerate a collar but are both chipped) i suddenly thought hey presto i'll patent the rfid based flap lol. somewhat too late - thanks {guerneseyman} for the info. Mind you, at £95 i think its cheaper to feed the local strays!

Take the point {21 Quest} re the dog door burgulary risks, but now you have me worried about Cat Burgulars...

Isaac Newton would never have thought of this.

Seeing as the borg is on strike...I would suggest one open window towards the top of the property and chip-reading mangonel, which propels the correct animal in through the window,

Cats would quickly learn to time this to catch birds in flight and access the the home.
