Pin Dropper

'It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop...' or could you??

Can you always be sure that your silences are really genuine? Has a room fallen quiet, or just fallen to a slightly softer level? Could you really 'hear a pin drop'? Here is a revolutionary new way to tell - whenever this machine detects a drop in noise levels, it will drop a pin. The reactions of the audience will tell whether or not you are experiencing a quality silence.

How often would you have to reload the darn thing? http://farm1.static..._7194438473.jpg?v=0

Couln't it just play a recording of a pin dropping?
hippo, Sep 03 2008

What I'd like is a pin that makes a really loud noise when it hits the floor.

A tubular bell with a pointy end?

/whenever this machine detects a drop in noise levels//
No, it must continuously drop pins, then compare the pin sound with ambient noise, to indicate audibility.

So this is going to need to be a mini flechette gun?

I'm not dropping my pin, Somebody might pick it up and wipe out my bank account.

I think a real pin could be held with a magnet at the end of an acoustically transparent tube. The drop surface would be a pice of laminate flooring, or similar, that would actually make an audible sound when the pin strikes. The software would have an idea of the sound level produced by the pin dropping, and would constantly compare that to the background noise. When the background fell say 6dB below the required threshold, the magnet would release the pin. After a suitable period, the magnet would re-energise and the pin would return, ready for the next quiet period.

You don't want this thing going off willy-nilly, so a check on the time-decay of the background noise would increase the chance of the silence being an appropriate pin-dropping occasion, rather than everyone having left the room, or fallen asleep.

       egbert - great idea

maybe to solve that problem it could have a detector for breathing, or heartbeat
up_on_cloud_nine, Sep 06 2008

You could also have it calculate pi at the same time. [Link]
swimr, Sep 18 2008

I want a gag version as well that's contained in a vacuum. Then to contradict someone else's claim you pull it out and <silence>. No, I'm sorry it's NOT that quiet.

seeing as thats been sorta done it should probably calculate e instead
