With Internet access fast becoming a reality on planes, I'm sure video conferencing will not be far behind.

But in the meantime, as it is quite common to have parties be at least partially separated on flights, it would be nice if you could dial Seat 25A and ask how your signifcant other is doing with the baby.

Optional video for planes with video equipped seats.

Great idea ... as good as those local messaging nets in I'Net cafes. (FYI: seat 25a is the most vulnerable to small bombs in a 747 as it is right over the center fuel tank. PanAm 800 was brought down this way ... :>( ... must be the cosmic coencidence control center at work here)

Nice idea and some airlines do that. The problem seems to some kind of feedback thing to do with the noise of the plane, where all you can really hear is a screech. Singapore Airlines has a multiplayer inflight challenge where u compete against other people at general knowledge questions.

Good idea, especially in a chat situation where you could ask for details on your destination - someone is bound to know the local area.

As an extra option there could be gaming if every seat had it's own screen. Install a flight sim and give the pilots a rest.

I remember being on a plane where each seat had a screen on the back of the seat in front of you. I think it was for watching TV, but I like your idea. [+]
Note to kid behind me "stop kicking my seat!"

Reddit stylee, work with your fellow passengers to identify the most suspicious passenger on the plane. Enough headphones tied end to end would provide the lynching cord.

//a plane where each seat had a screen on the back of the seat in front of you.// Surely, all but very short-haul flights have had seatback screens for quite a long time now, even in economy?

I just bring my own, it's made out of cardboard and tinfoil.
