Poor White Crackers
Budget christmas party favours

Instead of the 15 thousand pounds Sterling apiece Xmas crackers available from some exclusive stores in London, these are made from recycled office paper. Only one in ten actually has a gewgaw in it... the rest are just empty, like the lives of the budget-conscious recipients.

Most of them don't even make a noise when you tear them in half.

Baked. I think I've bought these before. Lame non-funny motto, cheap paper hat, the novelty is missing, and the only bang you get is if you shout it yourself.

pottedstu, Dec 20 2001

Do you sell them individually or do I have to buy a whole box?

DrBob, Dec 20 2001

       Individually.

[pottedstu], no joke, no party hat. They're in the deluxe version.

What is the name of that bloody store? Begins with an "A"...

UnaBubba, Dec 20 2001

I imagine the other sort of crackers (the sort you have with cheese in the UK and soup in the US) would be pretty similar. You might even get a larger bang.

pottedstu, Dec 20 2001

Oddly, the title to this idea has an entirely different meaning in the U.S..

phoenix, Dec 20 2001

Yeah, I was all set to yell "Pun!" until I read the text. Except that even then I didn't understand it. Can anyone translate this into USA-ian? Apologies for ignorance; I usually get this kind of stuff.

<Hearsay> Crackers are an English pop cap firecracker, tubular in form, wrapped in paper, and set off by pulling the opposite ends of the tube. They typically have candy and/or prizes inside. </Hearsay>

Similar to the little champaign-shaped poppers that are popular around New Years Eve and (in the U.S.) 4th of July.

Ah! Okay, yes, now I see. Thanks.

snarfyguy, Dec 20 2001

No, I remember a catalogue with 300,000 pound necklaces, Ferraris, 5,000 pound picnic hampers, etc. It may not have been a Department store, but it certainly catered to the ultrawealthy.

[phoenix], many of my ideas have names which are puns. I'm fully aware of the derogatory connotations of the term 'cracker' in the US southern states as it relates to usually rural folks with poor education and aspirations, and the term 'po' white cracker'.

I'm always up to some antics on the 1/2B.

UnaBubba, Dec 21 2001

What you mean "Oui" white man?

thumbwax, Dec 21 2001

oh you're pickin' on me again, an its chwistmus sod yer

po, Dec 21 2001

[UnaBubba] It's actually racist in nature and is used almost exclusively by blacks to refer to whites. So the pun comes across as "Poor White Caucasians". Still funny, but it would have been funnier if you hadn't known.

And then there's the tidbit of news that Cracker Barrel restaurants are being sued for pervasive racial discrimination against blacks. Sheeeeit, Clemuel, with a name like that what do they expect?

Saltines are already bleached and low-quality.
