Pop-up 'Phone

Ah! There it is!

My mobile (cell) 'phone is quite small. On busy days it is not unusual for it to end up covered with papers and other items on the right hand side of my work area.

I would be willing to sacrifice a little battery life for the sake of heating a few short Nitinol wires attached to some folding legs, built into the 'phone case.

When a call is received the wires are heated, the legs extend and the ringing 'phone pops up, out of the morass of paraphernalia on the desk.

NB. Please turn this feature OFF if you intend carrying the 'phone around in your pocket, lest embarrassment ensue.

Annotation:

You use a phone, so I assume you're not deaf...why not just follow the ringer?

What happens if you set the phone face-down?

Thank God it's not an idea for pop-up ads while you're talking on the phone!

Is someone calling you or are you happy to see me?

Four legs would do it. A tetrahedral formation would see the 'phone on legs and a leg straight up, to clear a path to clear air.

Perhaps a little light on the end of each leg? I leave my mobile on silent, when I'm at a client's offices.

Perhaps you could have a tooth hollowed out, for the microphone? It might change colour, but that's a small price to pay, surely?

Croissant for the concept. I can see a telephone, rising from the mess on my desk, like Arnie standing up in a shallow swamp.

A firecracker-sized explosive packet would free the phone and get your attention.

I'm sure they'd let you take one of *those* on a 'plane!

You could hide it in your shoe.

Have the flippy part of flip phones flip open automatically.

It wouldn't be much of a power drain if the legs were spring loaded and manually reset. A simple solenoid could trigger the legs. I'd kinda like to see it jump up a couple of feet off the table.

And flop around, like a beached fish.
UnaBubba, Mar 20 2004

And suddenly extrude spikes all over, like a blowfish.
Detly, Mar 20 2004

Meanwhile, it's struggling to bury itself further under papers, vibrating furiously to the bottom of the pile.
