Sitting in the middle of the table was a small hotplate, glowing bright orange.
Arrayed in a grim circle around it sat 8 men, each staring at the hotplate, flicking occasional glances at the pile of cash and casino chips beside the hotplate. The tension was palpable.
With a slight Tink! a
small, yellow seed fell on the hotplate and began to smoulder. Each man sat, trembling inwardly... POP!, the kernel exploded and flew upwards and outwards slightly. Eight eager hands snaked out from beneath the table, snapshooting as they came up.
The THWOOSH! of eight separate bursts of compressed air, almost as one, filled the room.
THUNK!... Ramsay yelped AWOUCH! as the hot popcorn morsel slammed into his naked forehead. Travelling at almost 1100 feet per second it brought an immediate welt to his skin, looking vaguely like a picture of a rabbit drawn by a 4-year-old.
Turner reached forward and scooped the pile of cash and chips towards his chest, tossing a deck of 100 $100 bills back into the centre of the table. He rubbed absently at the graze on his right ear and watched as the stunned Ramsay was helped from the table, to be replaced by a swarthy Middle Eastern man.
The bets were falling into the pile as Turner began concentrating on the hotplate... Portrait of "The Old Maid"

Kernel Gaddafi sat down and while seeming to straighten his robes, carefully slipped a loaded Glock under the table. |
|
| |
Across from him sat the mysterious silver-haired woman known only as " The Old Maid ". |
|
| |
On her left was the eccentric progammer Dextrose. |

I hope there's some kind of Dorian Grey shennanigans going on with that picture profile, Mach. |
|
| |
Was the photo taken just after last orders were called? She seems to have racked up the drinks just in case. Looks like she could do with a straw, though. |

My apologies, I am desperately trying to remember the name of a company that sold raisins/sultanas. I *thought* that it was 'Old Maid'. Can anyone help? |
|
| |
p.s. [Mach] you're lovely and you know it! |
|
| |
[gnome], the raisin company you're thinking of is Sun-Maid. And thanks for the compliment. I wish I looked that good. |

[lost], using a straw would just add to the wrinkles around her mouth. |

Seems more like Russian popcorn roulette than poker to me UB. Deal me in. |

"Here's your airgun... Don't point it at yourself, or you'll get hurt. The object is to wait until the corn pops, then shoot it out of the air, with a blast of compressed air. Whoever gets hit with the popcorn is out. Whoever has the most effect on its trajectory gets the pot. Judges' decision is final. Disqualification and forfeit of your bet if your gun is above the table before the popcorn lifts off the hotplate. Wear glasses, if you like your eyeballs enough to want to keep 'em. Minimum bet is a $1250, so the minimum pot is $10K. Have fun, Tiger." |

Do you win or lose if you catch one in your mouth? |
|
| |
At that speed I'm not sure you'd want to. I guess that catching it in your teeth means you're a winner. |

This is funny! Great idea!!! |

Here in the States we sometimes play a game called 'spoons.' I forget exactly how the card rules go, but something forces one player to reach in the center and grab a spoon, at which time everyone else has to be quick on the trigger to grab the remaining ones. Naturally there's one less spoon than there are players, and the odd man's out. |

The raisin company here is Sun-Maid. |
|
| |
You'd have to be stupid NOT to try this! |
|
| |
Holy cow! I'm part of a case study. |
|
| |
Anyone any idea what sort of pressures you'd need to get a Mach 1 compressed air-stream? |
