One of the major problems associated with third world countries and disaster areas is the lack of clean drinking water.
It should be simple enough to pack a drinking straw with activated carbon and a membrane either end to make a water filter that is cheap, effective and easily portable.
Thousands
of them could be carried by just a few people, for distribution in earthquake areas and flood zones. They could be used quite a few times before they became ineffective.
Practically any water would be rendered potable, almost immediately. Comparison of Different Membrane Properties (about 3/4 down the page)
http://www.sensorsm.../gas0598/main.shtml Probably not going to want to use Hydrolon PTFE membrane which requires > 90 lbs. pressure to force water through it [half, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]
(??) Aqua Straw: water purifying straw

Problem: the filters I've seen are often quite slow. You would need to really suck to get much out of this. Better to just have a filter on a bottle. |

That may be so, but that would be more bulky and certainly less effective at removing the nasties, like faecal matter and cryptosporidium. |

Now I remember why I stopped visiting this site. |

"...why I stopped visiting this site" Aw, c'mon, [spacemoggy]'s seemed like a fair analysis. |

And _possibly_ baked, along with this one. |

Thanks, [waugs]. It's amazing what's out there, isn't it? |
