Programmable ND Grad Filter

Not just an ordinary Neutral Density gradient filter - this one can be changed! A bit.

Design gradients on a computer, download them to this unit, and select your efforts from a choice of presets in the field.

In practice, this ND filter might resemble a Cokin-style square filter and holder, in front of the lens, but this filter substrate is actually electronically able to vary density locally, perhaps using a technology like LCD (and ensuring colour neutrality), so that specific gradient forms may be tailored.

A further advancement might allow localised grad tints, too, for colour effects such as the often-overused 'half tobacco' grad that was done to death for sunsets in the late 80s in Miami Vice and Top Gun types of material.

Annotation:

You need a Spatial Light Modulator (SLM - see link) - it's basically an LCD array of addressable pixels which you can pass light through. I did an electronics project at university using one of these in the 80's, where I got to use the department's very exciting Argon Ion laser, and write BASIC code to put different patterns on the SLM.

I saw the title and thought this would be some method to keep me from hearing about Brady Quinn anymore.

Eh? Never heard of such a person. Someone you know personally?
