Walking sticks are cool. They may serve as a weapon, a prop, a means of clearing a path through a crowd, or just to fend off a nasty dog.

Umbrellas have fewer uses but are essential when the need arises.

Cell phones are necessary and do little other than record names and addresses of people whom we wish to telephone when we are not at a fixed point.

The RSP is a device that combines all three: The look and feel of hand-polished mahogany or persimmon wood; A stylish, wide umbrella, (stored in the shaftof the cane) at the twist of the handle; A cellular phone designed into the handle with built in satellite dish (just pop the umbrella and invert). The antenna is even kept well clear of the head of the user.

Shockproof, waterproof, elegant and functional. No-one ever wanted a stick the way they'll want one of these.

I thought you meant one of these as a phone [dobtabulous, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004]

Not sure about the cell phone part of this idea - it sounds a little unwieldy to use; even a shoe phone would probably be more practical.

Huh? You just hold it up to your ear. If it's raining then it's already near your ear.

[Zanzibar] - let me get this right.. you want an umbrella/mobile phone hybrid ?
neilp, May 18 2004

Umbrella / mobile phone / walking stick hybrid, comprising a satellite dish.

I don't think I can make it any more impractical, without being silly.

"I don't think I can make it any more impractical"

The phone will remain wireless then? And it won't generate it's own rain to prevent you looking silly with your umbrella open in perfectly lovely weather? And it won't turn itself upside down when a call comes in so that the rainstick sound acts as a ringer?

I'm with you, though I'd want a sword as well+

Oh what the hoot, throw in a coin dispenser as well.

I think the phone inside is a bit inconvenient, they are so small, anyway, for pockets, but the umbrella could certainly be an antenna and you could have a tiny t.v. in the walking stick. or t.v./radio

       //Cell phones are necessary //

<pantomime> Oh no they're not! </p>

'boned out of sheer anti-cellphone prejudice.

You may well have one of them hiding in your beard, [DrBob]. I could swear I saw you passing through Falmer recently.

// Huh? You just hold it up to your ear. //

There are a few situations, like in a car, where holding an umbrella up to your ear would be somewhat awkward.
