I was thinking about how cool it would be if one had internet-enabled goggles that would overlay an "avatar" on top of real people. One could wear digimarc-encoded clothing so that the goggles know who is who, and a sophisticated motion-tracking algorithm would enable it to "cut-and-paste" that person's avatar on top of them.

Oops, I thought you meant a real life avatar.

avatar \Av`a*tar"\, n. [Skr. avat[^a]ra descent; ava from + root t[.r] to cross, pass over.] 1. (Hindu Myth.) The descent of a deity to earth, and his incarnation as a man or an animal; -- chiefly associated with the incarnations of Vishnu.

Now that would be cool !!

Well, after checking out that site I have to wonder why they propose using unique smells (which could go all over the place) rather than having graphically-encoded clothing (ala Digimarc.) Digimarc encoding of clothing should be subtle enough to go with a variety of styles.

This sounds like "Changeling: the Dreaming" rpg from White Wolf where fairies (in mostly the elven sense) look like normal people except to those that possess second sight. Those people can then see fairies as elves, goblin and people with animal aspects carrying imaginary equipement. This would be a technological implementation of this.
