The old man, stooped and rheumy of eye, wheeled and launched the grafting knife in one fluid motion. It sang through the air, impaling the gall wasp neatly through the head, pinning its wriggling body to the wooden gatepost.

Selecting another grafting knife from his cloth tool roll, he bent again to his task, motioning to his apprentice to retrieve the thrown knife.

In the background, a stunning garden greeted the eye, not a leaf out of place, other than those left deliberately so, to convey an air of nonchalant indifference and effortless perfection.

The apprentice bowed, handing the knife to the master, who showed him for the thousandth time how to make a perfect slip graft.

Wordlessly I slipped away, leaving them to their arcane rituals and silent understanding.

Nice try. Grafting, cloning etc. is done with dull tools, to rough up the mating surfaces and cauterize/cauterise the wound site.

Ask for "Dull Tools" by name at your next surgery.

No-one said the knife was sharp, [mens]; merely that it stabbed the wasp through the head.

I thought it was the wasp's apprentice who got stabbed in the movie?

Nice - You know my Granny and Grandad are/were true examples of these quiet master-gardeners, as are thousands of people out there right now, mastering the nature around them through humble, but skilled practice. Not new, but[+] anyway.

Crouching tiger lilly hidden snap dragon.

I wonder... does dragon shit attract dragonflies?
