A Microwave Oven with a built in smoke detector.
As soon as food starts to burn, 'Ding', the microwave shuts off.

I know a man, a partner in a city law firm, whose wife left him. He set up house for himself and decided to roast a chicken for his dinner.

Having got everything he needed, he put the chicken in the oven for 80 minutes, like it said on the packaging, then went for a long ride on his bicycle.

He came home to find his apartment filled with stinking smoke and the fire brigade inside, having smashed the front door down, after neighbours called them.

He later bought another new microwave oven and took some cooking lessons.

Perhaps a pressure plate that shuts it off if whatever's in it starts moving around, like, for example, a cat or other small animal? Or an internal safety override switch that neighbors of creepy people could train their pets to flip?

       seems reasonable

It would need to be a pretty sophisticated smoke detector, since there are a lot of vapors wafting around in a microwave that might set it off prematurely.

Or alternatively a very basic one, which detects the smoke particles blocking out light.

       What [Joolin] said.

Whatever's cooking may emit steam, vapourised fat (which cools into droplets), even a little "normal" smoke. An ionisation detector won't be suitable, optical detectors will rapidly become contaminated and useless. This would be a serous technical challenge.

       But a bun, anyway. [+]

An optical smoke detector with a wiper (like a windshield wiper?) :)

       //with a wiper// with a ship's clear view screen, surely?

Can we add a metal detector?
BunsenHoneydew, Oct 26 2009

Partially baked with a certain toaster, I saw a program about the making of it: a smoke detector pops the toast up when it detects a set amount of smoke, sensitive enough to select the right shade of brown.

But most people don't cook chickens in the toaster.

You don't know what you're missing.

I would suggest that [Joolin]'s observation is the reason these don't already exist.

[Mitxela]'s observation suggests otherwise!
