Scales Of Injustice

Because prison doesn't work terribly well

Since the almost universal abolition of the death penalty for serious crimes, prisons around the world have filled up with all manner of violent felons.

They, in turn, have influenced and arrested the rehabilitative processes attempted in respect of many millions of otherwise decent folks who've suffered a serious and usually momentary lapse in decision-making, resulting in them being incarcerated in company with recalcitrants who are possibly beyond redemption.

The most obvious solution to the problem of prisons becoming "crime schools" is to segregate all prisoners into solitary confinement. The flaw with this theory is that a large number of them will go stark, staring bonkers if denied socialisation.

BubbaCo Corrective Services has a possible solution to hand, and is trialling it in a number of test populations in secret locations around the globe.

In essence, it is a suit of armour, each part of it containing an electronic bracelet-style tracking device, and an electromagnet. The whole suit weighs enough to severely curtail any violent movement, and is fitted to the miscreant before they are released back into the care of their family or support organisation. Limited movement is still possible but the denial of liberty is an ever-present reminder of their debt to society.

If they are deemed to be breaking the bounds of their confinement regulations then the individual scales are activated and the electromagnets set the suit rigid, preventing further flight or violence until they are released by authorities.

Two-way communications and cameras are activated immediately prior to locking, to determine whether it is safe to lock the suit.

Not a perfect solution, but probably better than turning a great number of decent youths into hardened criminals and bumboys.

Assuming that the wearer is unable to remove the suit, you're going to have some pretty ripe smelling ex convicts fairly soon.

But [kaz], that's why we have cutaneous nanobots with very small scrubbing brushes. Don't we?
... and dinky little picobuckets, obviously.

So it's the well-baked house arrest, but in some sort of Iron Man costume?

//If they are deemed to be breaking the bounds of their confinement regulations// - by just anyone, or just the beautiful and witty sidekick every IronMan is issued?

Sounds more like a "Man in the Iron Mask" costume than an "Iron Man" costume. :)

These would be horrendously expensive, cause a tremendous amount of health problems, and make them easy targets in the street for vigilantes who feel they got off too easy. it's a laudable thought, but the problems far outweigh the benefits.

There are nearly 3 million US citizens in prison at the moment, and you want to complain about cost? Spend some of it on health care and prison reform and maybe some of your criminally insane, gun-totin' soccer mums will see their kids grow up?

You've also got the problem of the new "super criminals" who, once released, have bulked up from trying to force this suit around.
MechE, Oct 09 2009

Maybe. They usually do that shit in prison, anyway. Sod all else to do while you're waiting for the gate to open.
