Self-Cleaning Phones
Making life a little less dirty

After watching a segment on TV about how we should always wipe off a phone with disinfectant before we use it if the phone is also used by other people (to stop the spread of things like the flu) it seemed like there had to be a better way to accomplish the same thing. Very few people would carry around a bottle of disinfectant just to do this. A self-cleaning phone would solve the problem. Every time it was put back in its cradle a 30 second blast of ultrasound would kill any germs that had just been deposited on it. See link.

Ultrasound and germs - good for us, bad for them http://www.eurekale...12/ps-ust121302.php

"High power" ultrasound - phone are usually associated with low power (in fact, if you want them to do much more than ring you have to put batteries in). I often cradle the phone to end a conversation then pick it up again immediately for the next call. Are these things safe to be near?

If they're using ultrasound to look at fetus's and to de-contaminate food (in lieu of radiation), then they're probably safe. You're right though, we'd probably have to power them up a bit.

I *always* dunk my phone in a bucket of disinfectant after talking to DrCurry.

       Because you spoke to Curry?

Does "phone sex" make your 'phone dirtier than normal?

Would a UV light in the cradle require less power than ultrasound I wonder?

Adze, Nov 01 2005

Possibly, but it will also make the earpiece pretty warm.

You would put all the telephone sanitizers out of business, and you would have to make up some kind of excuse about a giant goat to make them leave.

Adze/UB: actually, the self-sanitizing telephone handsets out there all use UV light. I was going to post some links,
