Self-rolling dice

Dice rolled by small inbalenced internal motor

These dice resemble fairly normal dice, but react to lond noises like music or a hand clap by jiggling around randomly from a small internal motor rolling about for a while before coming to rest. These could either be a joke as someone rolling them sees them take about twice as long as normal to stop. Or could just be a gimic. Not decided yet. they'd either be powered by very small hearing aid type batteries or maybe the kinetic charging systems like those used by some watches.

digital dice http://www.talkinge...-Dice/LED-Dice.html
No need to "roll" [nihilo, Jun 16 2006]

Balance and center of mass http://online.cctt....ss/centerofmass.asp
They can't just "roll" unless they can defy gravity. [nihilo, Jun 24 2006]

They jump, not roll. [nihilo, Jun 26 2006]

       Cool, Mexican jumping dice.

I'll take a set, but I want a remote control for mine.

Baked. I have something like this. It's a die-sized and -shaped cube that has an array of 7 LEDs in its top surface. It's vibration sensitive, so merely picking it up, putting it down, jiggling it, or even loud noises are enough to make it "roll".

Apparently they sell kits that enable you make your own. [link]

I fail to see how your description and link make this idea baked, [nihilo]. What you have there is a LED display, not a vibrating unit.

These dice resemble fairly normal dice, but react to loud noises. Did you intend that the dice are going to tumble around the table by themselves? That is impossible if they are cubical, which is plain to see if you understand anything about center of gravity. But the digital dice can roll themselves -- no need to move around.

One time I had this die sitting on top of the stereo and the music set it off and it scared the hebejesus outta me.
Damn self-rolling dice!

Perhaps I misunderstood your idea at first. The electronic one doesn't move by itself, no. But it "rolls" (generates a number between 1 and 6) by itself, without being touched.

The sides would have to be more than "slightly rounded" for it to be able to roll. But if it's round, then it doesn't resemble "normal dice", it resembles round dice. Unless it's actually a *jumping* die, sort of like a Bumble Ball toy. But even those are round, not cubical, more likely than not because of the center of mass issues. Maybe you should just consider making your self-rolling die spherical. Then it can roll itself down the street with some of my pizza balls.
